Wei Wuxian’s never thought about it until just now, but Jin Ling really doesn’t have much of his parents. The two of them are sitting on the same pier Wei Wuxian and Shijie and Jiang Cheng used to spend so much time on, passing a jar of wine between them, when Jin Ling springs the question on him: “What was my A-Niang like?”
It really does just figure that Jiang Cheng wouldn’t talk about her much. Wei Wuxian takes a deep drink, passes Jin Ling the jar, and answers: “Shijie was kind. She hated conflict, but she also hated lying, which means she’d never tell you how she really felt unless you asked her directly, and at that point she usually just erupt. When I punched your dad and ended their first engagement she yelled at me right under this dock for ruining her life.”
Shijie’s son gapes at him. “You punched my dad? How did they get married in the first place if you ended their engagement– also, why would you do that? Details, Wei-qianbei, details. They’re important.”
Wei Wuxian snorts, and tells him he’s been spending too much time around Zizhen, but he also tells Jin Ling the whole sorry tale– or he tries to, anyway, but he barely gets passed the context about that damned peacock never being good enough for Shijie when before he’s interrupted.
“Wait,” Jin Ling asks, “Slow down. My A-Die wasn’t, like. Evil? Was he? Like Xiaoshu or Yeye?”
He looks so… scared, that Wei Wuxian braces himself to do a hard thing. He takes a deep breath, to prepare. “No,” he manages, “He wasn’t evil. He just… Well. According to Shijie and your Jiujiu, he just really disliked the idea of an arranged marriage. I think he was just fucking stupid, personally, but the important thing is that I never liked him and his only redeeming quality was that Shijie was in love with him. Well, and Mianmian was his friend, which counts for a lot, actually, but I’m still going to keep disliking him on principle. No one could ever be good enough for my shijie.”
